Blankspace is proud to host German artists Grosser Happen & Nogger (a.k.a. Hank Schmidt in der Beek
& Niklas Schechinger.) This dynamic conceptual duo from Berlin, have created a series of paintings
based on the elements of chance. The works included in the exhibition were all created during the
playing of a single card game called Herz ist Trumpf (roughly translated means Hearts win).

Each of the 32 abstracted paintings represents a single card that has been thrown down during game play,
the artists tracked each cards movement on the table throughout the course of the game. Included in
the installation is a video showing the artists and card game in action.

Niklas Schechinger and Hank Schmidt in der Beek have been collaborating artists and friends since
their birth in 1978 in Munich, Germany. These partner artists both attended the Academie des Beaux
Arts in Bruxelles, Belgium, and the Art Academy of Offenbach am Main, Germany, from 1999 to 2005.

Nikla and Hank have exhibited their collaborative projects worldwide and were recently featured in an
exhibition at the Kim Light/LIGHTBOX Gallery in L.A. curated by Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand fame.

Support for this project is provided by Southern Exposure's Alternative Exposure Grant Program.
