Samuel Lopes is a trans artist currently living and working out of Vallejo, CA. He spent his formative years in Providence, RI, where he received a BFA in printmaking form RISD. After college, Sam began to work restoring historic buildings, including a Feminist Studio Collective, The Dirt Palace (a former library and church), of which he is a Founding member. Along with his deep connection to historic architecture for it's ability to hold memory, his artwork has been inspired by his experiences being perceived as both male and female. Both of these things have pushed him to see beneath the surface in himself, his environment and the people around him. His most recent work chronicles the "life" of an empty Gothic Victorian house for which he is a caretaker. Each painted room serves as a physical and psychological landscape, representing both an unseen history and vibrant subconscious.
Sam received his MFA from CCA in 2007 before moving from San Francisco to Vallejo. He has shown in Providence, Boston, New York, Portland, Mexico, San Francisco, Seattle, and LA. He is a SECA and BAN 2008 Candidate.
